Will DVDs become obsolete?

sesame asked:

Perhaps like music, they will soon be saved on hard drives. I have spent a fortune replacing my old VHS tapes!

They tried to replace the CD with minidisc a few years ago, but that didn’t really take off. Maybe people will have resistance to replacing DVDs.

dvds will be around for a long time. cds arent going anywhere, and that has been proven. the hd thing is going to blow up, but standard dvds will be there for quite some time

No I don’t think they will.
They should be around for another 20 years at least

My dad is convinced that it’s time to invest in a Blu-Ray player, because DVDs are quickly coming to their end. I don’t think so. I’d say we’ll have a good 10-15 years with the DVD before the Blu-Ray goes truly mainstream. It still costs a fortune to buy a Blu-Ray player and a DVD player sells for as low as 20 bucks.

And just about everything that plays on a televisions screen is a DVD, everywhere in the world. It’s going to take a long time to make all that Blu-Ray.
