romeo asked:

I am a member of a small music band. our style is mostly country.
We have a 12 channel PA sytem. but no one seems to be able to adjust/set the mail equalizer. Where could I get information on how to do it. I need to know how to set up the PA for music and also for voice.

An EQ on a PA system is about like an elevator in an outhouse. What fer??? A basic tone control (treble/bass) will handle most aspects of amplified speaking.

For music, PA systems are already limited in their range of frequency response, so using an EQ is like trying to squeeze a cannonball through a garden hose. But, if you just gotta do it, a general rule of thumb is that human hearing tends to fall off at the low end and at the high end of the frequency spectrum. So if you leave your middle frequencies at 0db and then adjust each side gradually to resemble a ‘smiley face’, you’ll be boosting the upper and lower ends to compensate for people’s lack of sensitivity.

To achive more accurate adjustment, you need a pink noise generator (which sounds a lot like static), and a spectrum analyzer to see the acoustical deficiencies of your environment. Then you can adjust the necessary frequencies to compensate for those deficiencies, so that you have a relatively flatline response on your spectrum analyzer.
