How good are DTV converter boxes compared to built in DTV tuners?
Mountain asked:
I heard that Circuit City opposed them for various reasons including that they are not as good of receivers as the built in ones.

I like to do crazy antenna setups and I **** to think I’m being limited by that little tiny box that’s a kink in the hose. With analog I used to get crazy channel; I got at least three of each network; I am in a central location.

Converter boxes work fine. Whether they’re as good as the digital tuners in a new TV is debatable. You should be able to get all the stations you got before plus more programming. A digital transmitter allows a TV station to transmit more than one signal. You should see at least 2 different programming streams from each station. Some of the ones I get have 4 different programming streams. If you have a TV station that broadcasts on channel 9 you might see something like 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4 for the separate programs all from the same station.
