How do I stop a clicking noise in the stock cassette deck in my ’97 Toyota Camry LE?

hl_masters asked:

I’m trying to use a cassette adapter to play my iPod through the car’s stereo, but it is making a clicking noise. I thought it might be the adapter, but it is doing it for regular cassettes too (by the way, in writing this, other than the iPod reference, I feel like it’s 1998 and I’m in middle school again). Both the adapter and normal cassettes play, but this mechanical clicking noise won’t stop.

It is definitely coming from the deck and not the speakers, and is annoying more than anything else. I have a 7 hour road trip coming up, and I’d like to get it fixed. ANy thoughts would be helpful.

take apart the tape and pull out the white teeth or gears and put it back together and is should work i did this and it took care if the problem

Maybe its time to upgrade to CD. I think you have a notch loose from the pillar that turns the tape, so it slips on every rotation. Or there is something nasty in it that keeps going around. You might try sticking a vacuum stick in it and giving it a good suck, but it is probably shot. Try a car yard, you can probably replace it for $10 and install it yourself.

This is 2007, some head units do not even have CD anymore. Do yourself a favor and get a CD player.
