How do I make my old audio receiver work with my new hdtv?

I am trying to hook up the onkyo receiver so that when I use the tv, the sound will come through the speakers. What settings should I have? theres no hdmi output in the receiver.

ps. i use my ps3 to play movies etc. and its plugged into hdmi 3
its a panasonic 42″ 720p. do i need to change the audio settings on the tv?

    If your TV source is a DirecTV, Dish or Cable box and has an optical or coax (SP/DIF) OUTPUT, and your receiver has either one of those types of INPUTs, then you just need the appropriate cable to patch between them.

    Check for a Optical Audio Out from the TV, check for Optical Audio Input on the receiver…if you have both of these then you can connect it with an Optical Audio Cable

    If you have just the regular Red and White RCA jacks then just use that to connect to the reciever…

    For the PS3 I would recommend you keep the HDMI going to the TV but ALSO connect a Optical Audio Cable from PS3 to you Onkyo Receiver to get surround sound…You can connect both at the same time but in the PS3 audio options you’ll have to make sure that the audio is set for optical out
